In just another week, spring will be here.

And although I can’t say for sure why this season is called “spring,” I can tell you that in Korean, it is called “bohm.”

However, Koreans almost never refer to spring simply just as “bohm.”
They call it “sae-bohm,” in which “sae” means ‘new.’

Therefore, you could say that Koreans are literally calling this season “New Spring.”

As we will soon find out, the season of spring is a time in which everything becomes new and fresh.
It is when the frogs come hopping back into the world, the new blades of grass begin to sprout, and the beautiful flowers reappear. Truly, it is the season in which nature is reborn.

And as these changes take place, we as humans are the ones who see it.
We are the ones who watch nature renew itself.

For this reason, spring can also be seen as the season that enables our minds to see everything around us as new.

Even in the hardest or darkest of times, if we are just able to see some kind of a new hope or new dream, we will always be living in the novelty of spring.

As we all know, people like new things.
Whether it’s a new shirt, a new car, or a new piece of technology, people will tend to take a liking to it.

However, things that are bought brand new from a store are not the only things that are new.

If we are just willing to look at something old and believe that it is new, even the oldest of things can become something entirely new in itself.

This is the exact reason why I am so satisfied with running my dry cleaners.
Everyday, as I clean, iron, and press, I get to take your clothes and turn them into something new and fresh.

So with all that said, I hope that in this upcoming time of a New Spring, you will be able to find a new strength and a new hope no matter how old or tough the circumstances.

Among the thousands of languages around the world, do you know which one is spoken
the most?

Although many people think the answer is English, it is actually Chinese. With over
1.3 billion people living in mainland China, the number of people who speak Chinese
greatly exceeds the 1 billion people that speak English. Nonetheless, the size of
China and the United States is just about the same.

But thousands of years ago, rather than being one large country, China was made
up of about 300 smaller countries. Around 221 BC, China was unified by the Ch’in
Emperor, Shi Huang-Ti.

As the first emperor of China, Ch’in Shi Huang accomplished many great things, including
building the Great Wall of China.

But even though he helped build such a great empire, the one thing that Ch’in Shi
Huang truly wanted was to never grow old or die. For that reason, he sent many people
in search of a medicine that would keep him young and immortal.

Of course, no one could find this medicine, and within 15 years, the Ch’in Dynasty
was ended.

However, this story isn’t just about an emperor who lived 2,000 years ago.

What I mean is that even today, ordinary people like us want to stay young and live
for a very long time. But like Ch’in Shi Huang, no one is able to stop time.

It is now March.

March is the month of becoming refreshed.

It is the month in which all things are renewed as spring arrives.

And although refreshing our bodies may not be an easy thing to do, refreshing our
minds is something we can do at anytime.

As we refresh our minds this month, we will be able to feel revived and renewed,
as we hear the joyful sounds of spring and feel the cool breeze on our skin.

Truly, the medicine that will keep us young and alive is our minds.

So this spring, as I clean and refresh your clothes, I hope that your minds, too,
will be refreshed.

A Korean figure skater had won the gold medal. Her name is Kim Yu-Na.

Today I wanted to share with you a little about Korean names.

First off, I want to clarify that Kim Yu-na’s name is actually supposed to be pronounced like Yun(the ‘un’ pronounced like the ‘un’ in sun)-ah, not You-Na. Perhaps she purposely had it spelled Yu-Na to make it easier for westerners to pronounce.

Also, Kim is her surname or family name and Yun-ah is her given name or personal name.
Most Korean surnames are single syllable and given names two syllables. However, there some rare exceptions to this rule, where surnames are two syllables and given names are single or three syllables.

Each syllable in Korean names, has a special meaning. For example, in Kim Yun-ah’s name, ‘Yun’ means ‘beautiful’ and ‘ah’ means ‘child’. So ‘Yun-ah’ actually means ‘beautiful child’.
Interestingly enough, her surname ‘Kim’ means ‘gold’. So her full name means, ‘child as beautiful as gold’.

All Korean names have special meanings. When Korean mothers and fathers name their children, they hope that their children become what their names suggest. They give their children names that mean that the child will live a long life, make a lot of money, live happily, become a great person and the like.

Of course, not all Korean children actually fulfill the meaning of their names. No matter how special someone’s name is, it does not directly affect how that person will turn out.

I’ve read a newspaper article on Kim Yun-ah. The article said that when her peers practiced skating 10 times, she would practice 60 times. She worked hard to become a ‘child as beautiful as gold’.
Success in life is not determined by the meaning of a person’s name, rather it’s the amount of effort that a person puts forth that actually affects the quality of that person’s life.

Like Kim Yun-ah worked so hard to be able to win gold in the Olympics, I want to work just as hard to satisfy your garment cleaning needs. No matter what my name means.

With each and every day that passes by, the hours of daylight have been increasing more and more.
In fact, I’ve noticed that up until just a while ago, I had always opened the store while it was still dark outside. But now, the sky is bright and radiant even in the early morning.

If you’ve ever watched the sun rise, you’ve probably noticed that the sun brightens up the sky even before it has fully risen. Well, when this happens, Koreans often say that the morning sky is “opening.”

Long ago, many Koreans believed that the early morning was the most effective time to pray. For this reason, the women in Korea–particularly the mothers–would go outside everyday right before sunrise, lift their heads to the “opening” sky, and pray to the sun or the moon. They would pray for the well-being of their children, the health of their aging parents, and the comfort of their families’ homes.

It was only about 200 years ago that Christianity found its way into Korea.
And now, 200 years later, there are thousands of Korean churches both in Korea and in America.

Of these churches, many hold Morning Prayer meetings everyday at the crack of dawn.

In this way, Korean churches have essentially found a way to bind together with the old Korean tradition of our mothers.

On my way to work the other day, as I watched the first signs of morning surface into the sky, I reflected upon the prayers of those women and was soon motivated to recite my very own prayer.

Of course, I prayed for another healthy and joyful day of work.

But I also prayed for the peace and happiness of you, my client, who I am so grateful for.

I truly hope that you will all remember to keep faith and aspire for your hopes and dreams every time you see the morning skies opening.

Working at a dry cleaner, I need many different types of equipment–a dry cleaning machine, a washing machine, pressing & finishing equipment, etc. And as you may notice, much of these essential items are very large and heavy. However, there are two things that are very small but are some of the most important things we need at our store.

These two things are a needle and thread.

Truly, no matter how skilled someone may be at fixing and altering clothes, without a needle and thread, he or she wouldn’t be able to sew even a single button.

Moreover, they also wouldn’t be able to do anything with one item but not the other. One must always have both a needle and thread together. Otherwise, neither item would be of any help.

In Korea, we often say that the most important people in our lives are like our needle and thread.

So think about your life.
Who is your needle?
Who is your thread?

Of course, we all know that the large and heavy equipment in our store is key to running our business. There’s no doubt about it.

However, the importance of the needle and thread are often overlooked. Because they are such small, inexpensive, and easily-accessible items, we seldom consider them very significant.

But sometimes when we need these items most, we look around and find that they’re not there. And then we realize that we really can’t do anything without them.

So as this month of February comes to a close and a new season of spring begins to emerge, let us not take anything for granted. Let us remember the things that we usually fail to notice, like a needle and thread, and let us be thankful for them and cherish them always.

Here in America, we send tons of cards every Christmas, but in Korea, it’s tradition to send cards on New Year’s. We call those cards “yun-ha jang,” which just means “New Year’s greeting card.”

Usually, a yun-ha jang consists of a traditional Korean picture, along with a message that wishes the recipient a happy and healthy New Year’s.

So with that said, here is my yun-ha jang to you.

So like a beautiful flower that blooms out of the snow, I hope that no matter what conditions or circumstances you may currently be facing, you have a wonderful New Year.

Today is Korean New Year’s day.
Among the many traditional folk customs of Korean New Year’s is something called “hae-won-dduk”, which actually means “the cake of forgiving one another”.

Throughout the year, many of us may find someone who we just don’t get along with — someone with different interests, thoughts, or beliefs. And as the year goes on, through different conflicts or misunderstandings, we may grow to have bitter feelings for such a person and to hold a grudge with them. Of course, being in an uncomfortable relationship like this can be painful and distressing for both parties.

So in Korea, as a new year is approaching, we make hae-won-dduk as a symbol of wiping the slate clean, and we give it to the person that we’ve had an uncomfortable relationship with. Because giving the hae-won-dduk directly to the person may be awkward or embarrassing, Koreans often give the dduk to a monk, who then gives it to the person. By doing this, people who haven’t gotten along throughout the year learn to forgive one another and they are able to start a new relationship.

Because I live in America, I wasn’t really able to celebrate Korean New Year’s. However, I would still very much like to hold a noble tradition like hae-won-dduk.

As you know, Today is Valentine’s Day.

However, let us not just make it a day of giving chocolates to the people we love. Let us make it a day of showing love and being kind-hearted to those we’ve held a grudge with or to those we’ve been estranged from.

Let us write them a letter or give them a compliment.
Even if we give them only one word of kindness, let us convey our hearts to others in the way that hae-won-dduk does.
